If you feel starting a new business from a scratch seems too intimidating, then you may consider to buy a franchise. This business is supposed to give you a fast start because it has proven.
You may have known McDonald. Yes it is an icon of franchise business. Basically you buy a license to duplicate the successful business model. There is also a contract stipulating rights and obligation between franchisee and franchisor.
Now you may wonder about high cost of starting a franchise. It is true that franchise business is not cheap. But there is a range of initial capital from a few hundred dollars to million dollars. You just need to review and select the right choice.
Reputation And Product/Service
First check the franchisor reputation. The best way to do it is to ask other franchisee who has done a business with this company. Ask about general business relationship, not about specific franchisee performance. For example, you may ask whether the product, system and service provided are good. Check if treatment of complaint is fair.
But ...do not ask whether the franchisee is making money. It becomes too personal for franchisee. But you can observe from body language and franchisee operation.
Secondly check about product/service and market condition. Is the demand for product/service high or booming? Is the value of product justified? You can have a low price product, but if the quality and profit cannot support your business operation, why do you launch that business?
Franchisor Support
Another important element is how the franchisor support the franchisee. In the initial period you need lots of support to be successful. Will the franchisor help you in marketing?
Granted, initial training has to be provided. The question is... will it provide training on ongoing basis?
How about manuals, sales kits, accounting system? You must know how franchisor will provide these essential business elements.
Contract
You need to know whether fees and royalties are reasonable. Check about termination clause, transfer and renewal. Is there any sales quota?
Also be careful if you are required to buy certain inventory from franchisor. Is it fair?
Network Marketing
Actually good network marketing business operates just like franchise. You buy license and business system. Then you run your business following the principles of good franchise.
In fact an excellent network company offers the best deal compared with franchise agreement. You can get lifetime license, no annual fee, high commission for direct sales, no inventory, full training and support, etc.
The strongest point --and at the same time the weakest point-- is the initial cost. It is your advantage if you know how small the initial cost is. But it becomes a low motivator if you stumble to problems and easily quit.
Still, to be successful in any business, you need to be serious and spend signficant energy to make it great.
